This post is rated AO just in case the ESRB or Hiliary Clinton happen to run upon it...
I'm sorry, I said to myself, "John, you aren't going to post on this", and "Its not your concern, so why worry about it?" but the fact is, it is my concern, because I choose to eventually be a game developer. What exactly am I talking about? The ESRB deciding to give an AO rating to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, because someone modded the game and unlocked content that wasn't accessiable. Now, first of all, the guy that found this should be given a job--Take Two, you should probably be contacting him and flying him out there to meet you guys. Because of this one guy, you got loads and loads of publicity way after the game has hit its prime. That's sick.
Now, what about the ESRB? Why do we have the ESRB in the place? Because we have idiot parents that have absolutely no idea what games are (this will change, as soon as this generation of people start having children--well, at least, start having children out of high school). The ESRB should have similar guidelines to what either A) cable TV has, or B) what the movie industry uses. I know everyone is throwing up their arms, like, "We need to be different", "We are not the movie industry", "Why should we follow their guidelines?", and my answer to them--so something like this doesn't happen. We don't need that crook Hiliary Clinton running her mouth off and using this as a platform to get into office. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not sexist--its the 00s, we should have a woman president--just not her. But that's besides the point, and the point is--the ESRB needs to change the rating system to reflect something that people understand and don't have to look at a chart for everytime they want to buy little Timmy his birthday present.
The only reason that the current incarnation of GTA:SA is rated AO is because the ESRB has absolutely no standards. If there's blood, its M-rated, if its violence, its M-rated, if there's cursing, its M-rated, if there's sex, its AO? What the hell is that? I go to the movies and watch a rated R movie (which is comperable to M, 17+) and I see tits, ass, and sex. The only thing that could be rated NC-17 (the AO equivalient, 18+) is porn--GTA is not porn--poorly rendered, textured, and overly horrible artwork is not porn. Kate Winslett in Titantic was standing there with her [beautiful] tits visible and her bush, and what was that rated? PG-13. Well, before 2000 rolled around, someone in the movie industry decided that our kids could see Kate Winslett naked. I didn't hear loud mouth Hiliary then, so why do I hear her now?
What's the point of it all? We need a change in this industry. The rating system needs to be changed so that it reflects either of the two currently in place, people need to be familer with what they're looking at, and not just taking a wild guess. When is the last time that you saw the ratings posted at Walmart? I sure as hell didn't, hell, I'm not even sure if I've ever seen the ratings posted at EBgames (I don't go to GameStop). That's the first order of business--the second order of business is changing the ESRB for the better. We need the ESRB, no matter how many people think otherwise, because without them we are looking at Clinton and her army of drones. But the ESRB needs to evolve, and change some of the ways that they rate their games. Test audiences should be allowed to play the games under an NDA (the release date of the game on store shelves) and they should fill out a questoinaire about what they thought about the game, its violence content, sexual stuffs, etc. Then, based upon that, make their rating of the game.
If the ESRB changed the rating system to reflect the "Entertainment Industry" (because, porn is rated, you know) -- G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 -- and follow the same guidelines, i.e., Hugh Hefner's Beaver Hunt (should be NC-17) but cartoon violence, and cartoon sex (which would be laughed out in the movie industry) R, then we'll be fine. The funny part about all of thise, the violence, which was once a problem with GTA is being totally overlooked. Its the sex. That's kind of ironic if I do say so myselef.
The previous rating of AO was revoked because violent language, cursing, and the talk of blood was present. But no pictures of titties or ass.
